A Quasi-Polynomial Approximation for the Restricted Assignment Problem

چکیده
Scheduling jobs on unrelated machines and minimizing the makespan is a classical problem in combinatorial optimization. In this problem a job j has a processing time pij for every machine i. The best polynomial algorithm known goes back to Lenstra et al. and has an approximation ratio of 2. In this paper we study the Restricted Assignment problem, which is the special case where pij ∈ {pj ,∞}. We present an algorithm for this problem with an approximation ratio of 11/6+ ǫ and quasi-polynomial running time n log(n)) for every ǫ > 0. This closes the gap to the best estimation algorithm known for the problem with regard to quasi-polynomial running time.

On (1, ∊)-Restricted Assignment Makespan Minimization
Makespan minimization on unrelated machines is a classic problem in approximation algorithms. No polynomial time (2− δ)-approximation algorithm is known for the problem for constant δ > 0. This is true even for certain special cases, most notably the restricted assignment problem where each job has the same load on any machine but can be assigned to one from a specified subset. Recently in a br...

In this paper, a due date assignment scheduling problem with precedence constraints and controllable processing times in uncertain environment is investigated, in which the basic processing time of each job is assumed to be the symmetric trapezoidal fuzzy number, and the linear resource consumption function is used. The objective is to minimize the crisp possibilistic mean (or expected) value of...

متن کاملParallelizing Assignment Problem with DNA Strands
Background:Many problems of combinatorial optimization, which are solvable only in exponential time, are known to be Non-Deterministic Polynomial hard (NP-hard). With the advent of parallel machines, new opportunities have been emerged to develop the effective solutions for NP-hard problems. However, solving these problems in polynomial time needs massive parallel machines and ...
متن کاملOn the Configuration-LP of the Restricted Assignment Problem
We consider the classical problem of Scheduling on Unrelated Machines. In this problem a set of jobs is to be distributed among a set of machines and the maximum load (makespan) is to be minimized. The processing time pij of a job j depends on the machine i it is assigned to. Lenstra, Shmoys and Tardos gave a polynomial time 2-approximation for this problem [8]. In this paper we focus on a prom...
